Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 101

hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment that utilizes 100% pure oxygen in an enclosed environment with increased pressure, to aid people suffering from various conditions. HBOT enables increased oxygen levels to flow into the bloodstream and into the cells of an ailing patient, which can reduce swelling, speed up cell repair and even aid in fending off infections. While pure oxygen can be toxic if the pressure is too high, HBOT treatment is always done in a controlled environment by medical professionals.

How Does HBOT Treatment Work?

Normally, red blood cells transport oxygen throughout the body. The amount of oxygen then has to be shared equally for all vital bodily functions. Under normal circumstances, the oxygen may not reach the damaged tissue to repair it, but with HBOT, your blood oxygen level will increase and saturate the body’s tissues, fluids, and cells. This means that oxygen is carried into areas where circulation is impeded or blocked aiding the body’s efforts to heal as more oxygen can be delivered to damaged tissue.

Patients are able to lay comfortably on a bed within a Hyperbaric Chamber. At RegenQuest, we make use of the largest monoplace hyperbaric chamber in the industry, the Perry SIGMA 40 monoplace which has a 40.5” internal diameter.

For the duration of the treatment, you will have a highly trained technician at your side. The treatment itself is generally painless and the most discomfort you will feel is a full sensation in your ears, similar to the feeling you’ll get when flying and the altitude changes.

Multiple sessions are required in order to fully benefit from HBOT treatment, but as it does not require hospitalization – HBOT treatments can be fit into your daily schedule as needed. Each session at RegenQuest lasts between 80 – 120 minutes and if you are able to, you can drive to and from your appointment yourself.

Who Can Receive HBOT Treatment?

HBOT is an adjunct therapy for a variety of ailments or conditions that require increased oxygen to the tissue. Depending on your condition, your doctor may suggest hyperbaric medicine as an adjunct treatment. Patients may be candidates to receive HBOT therapy if suffering from a range of medical conditions such as:

  • Strokes
  • Autism
  • Diabetes
  • Decompression Sickness
  • Gas Embolisms
  • Radiation Injury
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Non-Healing Diabetic or Surgical Wounds
  • Bone Infections
  • Chronic Pain
  • Dementia
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Addiction
  • PTSD

Before starting HBOT treatment at RegenQuest, you will undergo an evaluation by a hyperbaric medicine specialist to confirm that HBOT therapy will act as a supplement to your normal medical care. Patients will receive a customized care plan that is specifically created for their needs.

How Should Patients Prepare for Treatment?

We provide you with cotton scrubs. A list of do’s and don’ts will be provided and reviewed with you before your treatment. Patients need to eat a healthy balanced meal before the treatment and avoid any form of caffeinated or carbonated beverages. Patients should note that cosmetics of all kinds (facial/hair) are not allowed to be worn during treatment nor is any jewelry allowed to be on your person while you’re in the treatment chamber.
