At RegenQuest, our professional medical staff offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Side effects of this therapy have long been studied. As is the case with most procedures and treatments in the medical industry, HBOT may have some side effects. However, these should not outweigh the potential benefits of hyperbaric. This painless and non-invasive procedure combines state-of-the-art medical equipment and professional licensed medical staff to ensure you receive the best care.
During an HBOT session, you will be inside a large clear acrylic chamber which is pressurized with pure 100% oxygen. The increased oxygen content and pressure enhances your body’s natural healing abilities. HBOT may be an effective treatment for a variety of medical conditions. Healing, especially in the case of wounds, is a widely recognized benefit of HBOT. The increased oxygen content and pressure accelerates new cell and bone growth and stimulates production of new blood cells. HBOT can also effectively fight off infections and bacteria. The release of growth factors and stem cells is also enhanced. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can help with issues such as:
- Chronic/Non-Healing Diabetic Wounds
- Radiation Injury to the bone or soft tissue
- Collagen Production
- Decompression Sickness
- Crush Injury
- Compromised Skin Graft/Skin Flaps
- Autoimmune Disorders
- Severe Anemia
All of our patients are assessed by a licensed medical provider prior to receiving HBOT. It is important that you disclose any conditions to our staff so that they can give you the best personalized care and treatment. With this information, we create a customized HBOT care plan. Included in this plan is personalized information from our professionals about other aspects of your well-being such as nutrition. We believe that a comprehensive, personal care plan created just for you is essential. We aim to provide excellent results, while minimizing the chances of oxygen therapy side effects or complications.
Oxygen Therapy Side Effects
Most common side effects:
- Mild Ear Pain – Some patients experience this minor side effect. This feeling is similar to what you might experience in an airplane taking off, or in a car driving up a mountain. The feeling goes away soon after getting out of the pressurized chamber.
- Nasal Dryness or Skin Irritation – The increased oxygen can dry the nasal passages and the skin.
More serious, rare side effects include pneumothorax, oxygen toxicity, and seizure.
Overall, HBOT is a safe, painless and effective therapy for numerous conditions. As is the case with almost every medical treatment, there can be side effects related to hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Our highly trained staff take every precaution to avoid any complications or side effects.
